TOEFL Structure
The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level and evaluates your ability to combine your reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
- Reading Section: (60–80 minutes) Measures the ability to understand reading passages like those in college textbooks
- Listening Section: (60–90 minutes) Measures the ability to understand main ideas, important details, implications, relationships between ideas, organization of information, and speaker’s purpose, and attitude
- Speaking Section: (20 minutes) Measures the ability to speak spontaneously and convey ideas clearly and coherently
- Writing Section: (50 minutes) Measures the ability to write in an academic setting

Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least 1 essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score.
